Many people believe that the dish has been invented in South India but according to historians, the dish was invented in Indonesia as some of its parts were ruled by Hindu rulers. History related to Idli It has been believed that the dish has been developed in Indonesia but you can find the similar dishes in some religious books of Karnataka. Steamed food started being cooked in Indonesia but its modern version is not available in any part of the world. Iddalage has been mentioned in a Kannada book named Vaddaradhane whose cooking style is similar to modern idli. The only difference that iddalage has been cooked by using black gram only. The making of rice idli was found in 1250 CE. Connection of Idli and South India Idli is a staple food of South India and is also a special dish for many festivals like deepawali. The food can be found in any hotel of South India. Apart from that, you can find idli in all over the world and idlis are available in different variations. Connection of Idli and World War Very few people know that idli also has connection with the Second World War. At that time, idli was cooked in Karnataka using rice. During the world war, there was shortage of rice so people started making idli with rava or semolina. Mavalli Tiffins in Bangalore were the inventors of rava idli during that period. Idli and Chutney Connection In order to cook idli, rice is soaked overnight and then it is grinded in a grinder. After that water and salt, and some spices are added in little quantity to make a batter. This batter is steamed to cook idli. There are many variants of chutneys available in South India, which are served with idli. The main ingredients of these chutneys are coconut, ground, and tomatoes. There are many variants of idli recipe available and people also experiment with the recipe to make new kind of idli. Besides ingredients, the shapes and sizes of idli also differ. One of these variants includes Tatte idli, which is popular on Karnataka. Idli is taken as variety of dishes like Idli vada or Idli Sambar. In fact Idli and Sambar complement the taste of each other with perfection.
